SWL01 - Albietz, Wendelin & Friedericka (Wemuzard)

The sudden death ot Mr. John Edward Stoneham in Townsville last week came as
a shock to his relatives and friends. Aged 78 years, he had been ailing for some time
and prior to going north had been an inmate of the Proserpine District Hospital.
Mr. Stoneham, who was born at Mackay, was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. H.
Stoneham, who came from England and settled there. He spent his boyhood there
and on leaving school worked on the staff of the 'Mercury' as a compositor.
On the outbreak of the Boer War, he enlisted with the Sixth Queensland Infantry Brigade
and saw active service in South Africa. Upon being demobilised, he came to Proserpine and
secured a position on the sugar mill staff and remained in the mill employ until last year. At the time of his retirement, he was probably among the oldest men on the staff.
Mr. Stoneham also purchased a farm in the Glen Isla district,
which he sold to Mr. Les Renwick in 1946.
During his life In Proserpine, Mr. Stoneham took an active interest in the Buffalo Lodge
and was a member of the subbranch of the R.S.S.A.I.L.A
Soon after his arrival in Proserpine , Mr. Stoneham married Miss Elizabeth Daly of Bowen and there were two children of the marriage, Miss Gladys B. Stoneham and Mr. J. E. Stoneham of Brisbane. Later he married Miss Matilda Albietz (Bowen), who predeceased him about eight years ago. Children surviving by the second marriage are Meadames S. O'Keefe (Sydney), W. Hurley (Home Hill), J. Wilson and J. Harker (Townsville), and one son Mr. Charles Stoneham (Saltwater, Proserpine). There are ten grandchildren. Other members of the family are Mr. Robert (Mackay) brother, and M. Cheetham (Bundaberg), C. Griggs (Calen), E. Ringuet (Finch Hatton), J. Hurley and M. Devine (Mackay) sisters. Three brothers predeceased him.
The funeral took place in Townsville and the ashes of his second wife were also interred.
